Occupation: Brothel Worker Family: None. Her father Nils Sörensen is presumed dead. Current Residence: Reed’s House in New Shelby Appearance: Clara is pretty but in a quiet, unassuming way that tends not to attract much attention. No matter how persistently the other brothel workers apply rouge to her cheeks and lips, she remains quite pale. Between her grey-blue eyes and sandy blonde hair, there is little color in her face. She is fairly slim and stands at 5’6,” tall enough to look most of her clients in the eye. Pastels are her favorite and she is drawn to light sprig muslin gowns. She is always neat and presentable, and tends to dress unusually demurely compared to the other brothel employees. Personality: Soft-spoken, gentle, and retiring, Clara might be the last person one would take for a common prostitute. While the other girls boldly approach men visiting the brothel who look like they have the deepest pockets, she tends to choose men who seem shy or insecure. Difficult or particularly demanding callers bother the conflict-adverse Clara, but she can count on Isobel or Madam Phoebe to sweep in and take an overly eager client off her hands. A childhood of being utterly dependent on her father for love and guidance has made her fairly weak willed. She finds taking independent action difficult and tends not to trust her own judgment or have a firm sense of self. Clara is sensitive, perhaps overly so, and is easily hurt by even the most subtle of criticism. While she has a firm, nearly unshakable sense of right and wrong on matters of importance, when it comes to day to day issues she is easily persuadable and finds it difficult to say no to anyone. Three years as a prostitute have not been sufficient to change Clara’s basic nature, which is trusting and sincere. No matter how many times people disappoint her, she continues to believe the best about everyone and seems genuinely surprised each time someone lets her down. Naturally something of a nurturer, she has turned this skill to her present occupation and often spends time offering emotional as well as physical comfort to her clients. She genuinely cares for most people she encounters and often ends up getting bogged down in others’ problems too easily. Violence and cruelty upset her greatly, enough even for her to risk speaking up and daring to offend someone. She is incredibly patient, it takes a lot to make Clara lose her temper. Placid and even-tempered, most people find it easy to get along with Clara and quickly discover she makes a loyal and sympathetic friend. Special Skills/Weapons Used: Spending nearly a decade tending to her father’s house taught her all the expected “womanly” skills. She is an excellent cook and baker when she puts her mind to it and has a penchant for unusual recipes. While it is certainly quite useless to her at the present time, she has considerable knowledge of both mining and prospecting thanks to he father. Weaknesses: Clara doesn't have the first clue about weapons and in fact is intimidated by rifles and pistols. Naïve and trusting, she is easy prey for a manipulator. She never seems to have any money on hand, possibly because she is always ready to hand it off to anyone who seems to need it. She has frequent lapses of common sense, which get her into trouble and no conception of personal safety thanks to her sheltered upbringing. PART THREE Clara was brought up in quite modest, but comfortable, circumstances in a tiny mining town about 100 miles east from New Shelby. Her mother died in childbirth when she was twelve years old, leaving Clara and her father to fend to themselves. She kept the house for him from this early age onwards and so had little time for friends or games. Her father, Nils Sörensen, worked as a miner during her early years but for most of her childhood he hopped about from one job to another, always hoping to strike it rich. She was always patient with his mad schemes, even when they ended up costing them most of the land surrounding their home and her mother’s piano. Despite his troubles with finances, her father was always warm and loving and she remained devoted to him. She received a marriage proposal or two but turned both down because she couldn't imagine leaving him to take care of himself. Wildly impractical and imprudent, Nils relied heavily on his cautious, pragmatic daughter. Her father later became a prospector and would often be gone for long periods of time. Clara was used to a solitary existence but found it difficult without any real companionship. A month after departing on a trip, she received a letter from him instructing her to sell their home and join him in New Shelby. He was planning on purchasing a new home for them there and informed her that he had found a valuable claim ten miles from town. Without question, she did as she was told and obediently sold their possessions at a fraction of what they were truly worth and hurried to join him in New Shelby. She arrived only to find no sign of him whatsoever. People seemed to remember a large, affable blond haired man but had no notion of what fate might have befallen him or where he might be. For nearly three months she remained at the inn waiting for him, living off the money from the sale of their home but it eventually ran out and she found herself destitute with still no idea of where her father could be. She had struck up an unexpected friendship with the madam of Reed’s House Brothel and when Phoebe saw what desperate straits she faced she suggested Clara give working at the brothel a try. While she desperately misses her father and dislikes selling her body on a daily basis, Clara has found a cautious happiness in this new existence. She enjoys the close quarters and familiarity of the other brothel workers after a childhood spent mostly alone. In particular, she appreciates Phoebe’s protectiveness and sees herself as something of a big sister to Isobel, despite their very dissimilar temperaments and the younger girl's more dominate personality. If she could only find a way to make peace with her father's assumed death, Clara believes she could be almost content in New Shelby. | |||||||||
